Manafau are skirts worn to perform in by both men and women and children, they are made from fau (hibiscus) fibre and there are different variations of manafau depending on the maker, the wearer, and the village they hail from. The most basic manafau are made from natural coloured fau but there are others with embellishments such as dyed fau, decorated waistbands etc. This manafau is made from fau in varying shades of its natural state of brown. Strips of fau are looped and knotted onto a waist length piece of fau, then left to hang loose from the waistband. The waistband is knotted in the sia technique and has pueki shells arranged in the shape of stars along the mid section.WāhiNiuatoputapu/Tonga/PacificAccession Number1969.94Rā Tāpiringa24 Apr 1969Tohu Tuakiri Kē41319 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete waist garment, 1969.94, 41319, Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1969.94, 41319Takenga ā-AhureaTonganKaiwaihanga Matua not known (Maker)WāhiNiuatoputapu/Tonga/PacificRāUnknownTikanga Waihangawoven sewn shell work hand knottedWā20th centuryWaitohu/māka41319 Niuatoputapu; TONGAPāohohibiscus (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibreshellshell[hibiscus (fibre)]/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibre/AAT MaterialsRaraunga Ine670 x 510mm524mm680mm7mmHuinga KaupapaFibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Men/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Women/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Performing Arts/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūClothing, OuterwearPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua10 Dec 2020 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
