Matau

human history
  • Other Name

    Fish hook (English)

  • Description

Matau. Fish hook. This is a matau made of popo (coconut shell). The matau is a light brown colour with a dark brown edge. The matau is curved with a pointed tip. The other end of the matau is curved to create a lug. Wrapped around the lug is a thin piece of afa which is braided using a fili laulua (two-ply braid) technique. This matau has a different design to traditional Tokelau matau or pa taki aheu (fish hook/lure), so this matau may have been made as a collectible item.
