Leho he‘e

human history
  • Other Name

    makau cu lee (Hawaiian)

    Squid lure (English)

  • Description

Leho he‘e. Squid or octopus lure. The fishing process involved submerging the leho he‘e into the water and shaking it up and down to attract the he‘e (octopus or squid). This leho he‘e is made of several components, namely one whole leho (cowrie shells) perforated and layered together against an ovoid stone sinker with a long wooden stem wedged between these.

The stem extends upwards from the base with a curved metal nail fastened to the end acting as a fishing hook component for the leho he‘e. Plant fibre cordage lashes all the components together securely and a short length of plant fibre cord trails off from the main form. Absent from this example is a hackle that may have been attached to increase the chances of successfully procuring a he‘e. Overall, the leho he‘e is brown in colour.
