    Spittoon (English)

  • Description

    Ipū kuha. Spittoon. This is a wooden bowl. This is a carved wooden bowl. It has an incurved rim and its diameter is wider than its height. A small wooden knob features below its rim and has been carved out as part of the bowl. It is smooth in texture and the grain runs horizontally around the bowl. This bowl was gifted to the museum by a chief. It is significant as these types of bowls were used by Ali'i (Chiefs) to dispose of their food scraps during meals.

    The contents carried within these bowls would be carefully disposed of by an attendant. In ancient Hawai'i such remains could be used by Kahuna 'ana'ana to cause harm against the individual's well being.
