Ili tea

human history
  • Other Name

    Finer fan (English)

  • Description

Ili tea. Finer fan. This is a hand woven 'ili tea. Tuāniu (coconut midrib) has been lalaga (woven) to form the diamond shaped lau (blade). Two different types of lalaga technique have been used to create the lau. Thin strands have been lalaga finely to create a border around the edge of the 'ili. The rest of the lau is lalaga using a looser technique and wider strands and in turn provides an interesting contrast to the border.

The 'au is made from a piece of 'ofe (bamboo) which is encased in lau niu (coconut leaf). This is further wrapped in a length of 'afa (coconut sennit) in a linear pattern as a decorative feature. Two nails have been nailed into the 'au suggesting that it was maybe hung as a wall decoration. This type of 'ili tea also could have been used to keep cool during a church service.
