  • Description

    Kato. Basket. This is a hand woven kato. It has been woven entirely from lau fa (pandanus leaf). It has been woven into a rectangular form with an opening at the top. Two braided kavei (handles) have been attached along the edges of the opening. They appear to have been made from a material that contrasts that of lau fa. The kavei show osme fibrous strands and are a darker shade of tan in comparison to the naturally coloured lau fa present upon the kato.

    The sides and base of th kato are constructed by two woven surfaces. The exterior presents mata pēle in a variety of styles. This is defined by black and pink dyed pinnules of lau fa against naturally pale off-white lau fa. The interior of the kato shows lalaga. The edge of the opening has been bound off naturally coloured pale off-white lau fa.
