Pa fagota

human history
  • Other Name

    Fish hook (English)

  • Description

Pa fagota. Fish hook. This is a hand made pa fagota made from two pieces of sisi (shell), fausaga (bound) together by a length of twine. The shaft of the pa fagota is made from lautifa (mother of pearl shell. The colour of the shell used to make the shaft determines it's name. The colour of this shaft is iridescent in colour and is slightly transparent, therefore it can be referred to as pāusi.

The pāusi is shaped like a thin rectangle with a curved end that rounds out to a sharp point. The lave (hook) is made from pakua laumei (turtle shell) and is a mix of dark and light browns. The lave is shaped like a hook but is square in shape as opposite to round like modern day hooks. The tip of the lave has been broken leaving a blunt point. Both sisi pieces have been drilled with tiny holes using a mean vili pa (Samoan drill). This is so a piece of twine can be threaded through to fausaga the two sisi together. The Pa fagota is also connected to a length of coiled 'afa (sennit) wrapped in twine. This Pa fagota would have been used by tautai (fishermen) to catch fish of various sizes
