  • Description
Kato. Basket. This kato is made from lau fā (pandanus leaf) and synthetically dyed strands of lau fou (lace bark). It is cylindrical in form and has been made with a lid. A single kavei (handle) has been attached to the main receptacle of the kato. The lid features two perforations for where the kavei has been threaded through so as not to entirely detach the lid from the kato. A small braided loop also made from lau fā, has been attached to the centre exterior of the lid. The main receptacle of the kato portrays diagonal mata pelē. These are made from the synthetically dyed strands of lau fou. They feature in yellow, pink, green and purple. The dyed lau fou has been attached to the external surface of the woven kato. The remaining mass of the kato which has been made from lau fā portrays a natural pale yellow colour.
