John Logan Campbell studied medicine at Edinburgh university; and was appointed as assistant-surgeon on the Palmyra when it sailed from Scotland to Adelaide in 1839. The following year JL Campbell in arrived New Zealand and established a business in the newly founded capital of Auckland.
