  • Description

    Au. Thatching awl. This au is cut and polished from a segment of animal bone. It was used in the thatching of rooves of old style Tokelau dwellings. The au is slightly curved in profile, cut at a slant and sharpened to a point. It has a highly polished surface treatment. It is light yellow with some discolouration. The darker interior area of the bone is exposed. The name 'MATAIO' is etched on, he was either the maker or the former owner of this au.
