Te reeree

human history
  • Other Name

    Sword (English)

  • Description

Te reeree. Sword. This is a hand held weapon. A length of wood has been cut, carved and filed to form a crescent shape. It is of a dark red and brown colour that is hard in material. This is for the purpose of a handle and blade as one component. A node has been carved out at the base of the handle section and then shaped to form a flat depth for the blade area.

Four pairs of the noko (coconut midrib) in two different lengths line the edges and centre, front and back of the curved blade. The shorter pairs of the noko line the centre of the back and the front of the blade. Each pair of noko has been continuously inlayed with wii ni bakoa (sharks teeth). A central perforation has been drilled into each wii ni bakoa where the kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibres) has been inserted and used to lash and position them and the lengths of the noko upon the blade. The end of the blade has been tapered to form a blunt point.
