    Stone pounder (English)

  • Description

    Reru. Pounder. Carved from a single piece of pohatu maori (basalt). Used for pounding/mashing food or ingredients for producing dyes. Overall shape is conical. Rounded pounding surface. Reduction from base to form cylindrical grip. Top of pounder has three grooves. Surface treatment: evidence of pecking. Dark in colour. Attributed to Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Gifted by T. F. Cheeseman in 1899.
