This long strand of te moni (shell currency) consists of small pieces of white nouo (conus shells) and dark brown nana (coconut shells) ground into small discs drilled at their centre and strung in an alternating monochrome pattern on a length of medium brown cord of te kora (coconut sennit). This te moni was previously tied off to form a te mwae (neck ornament) however this has broken. The pieces of nouo and nana are an average of 6.5mm in diameter.WāhiOcean Island/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiAccession Number1915.34Rā Tāpiringa1915Tohu Tuakiri Kē12728 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te mwae teimoone; 12728; Cultural Permissions Apply Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 12728Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiOcean Island/Gilbert Islands/KiribatiRāPre 1915Tikanga Waihangadrilled plaited polished shell work groundWaitohu/māka12728 OCEAN IS.
