    Stone pounder (English)

  • Kupu whakaahua

    Reru. Pounder. Used for pounding food or ingredients for producing dyes. Carved and roughly polished from a single piece of stalactite (keho, morevai). A knobbed grip with cut grooves constitutes the head of the pounder (the two lateral protrusions of the grip are rounded off). Body of the pounder is conical in shape (narrow at the neck and gradually expanding till widest at base). Convex pounding surface, slightly porous. Lopsided when propped up to stand on base.
