This Germanic lyre is a plucked instrument which evolved from the ancient lyre.

According to the Castles, this rotte is based on a 4-8th century six-stringed instrument found during an archaeological dig of a warrior’s grave in the Black Forest. They had it reconstructed from an illustration found in early music historian, Francis Galpin’s Old English Instruments.
