    Letter balance.

    First Post Office letter balance, used in Mangonui Post Office.

    Rectangular wooden base on four bakelite feet. Engraved in the wooden bass near the smallest weight is "N[broad arrow]Z". Brass screws, scales, and attachments for weighing are set on the top of the base. Engraved on the letter pan is "J&E RATCLIFF / MAKERS". Contained in slots at the front of the scales are seven square brass weights, graduating in size from ¼ oz. to 8 oz. Each weight is narrower at the base than at the top with a disc shaped knob on top. Engraved on top of each weight is the weight in ounces and the corresponding price for a letter.
