box

human history
  • Other Name

Indian lacquered box (part of set)

  • Description

Small circular lacquered box with lid and base, the smallest in a set of three nesting boxes. The base has a carved lip which slots into the inside of the lid, closing the box. It can be opened by pulling the two pieces apart. The outside of the box is an orange colour, with yellow flecks dispersed throughout. There are green flecks throughout the orange on the side of the box, but only on the lid.

There is a black circle in the centre of the lid, surrounded by a green circle. Some of the lacquer has worn off on the perimeter of the lid, exposing a greenish brown colour underneath the orange. The inside of the box is a lime green colour, made of wood. At the bottom of the box is a piece of very fine spun glass, which is a light blue colour. The underside of the box is a light green colour, and has a circular marking in the centre.
