  • Description

    Hoe. Carved ceremonial paddle. This hoe (paddle) is carved from ra'au (hardwood) into a leaf-shaped blade with a long slender to'o (shaft), round in section. The butt is carved into a conical shape depicting nine stylised ti'i (ancestral human figures) in a concentric arrangement. The hoe is carved in fine geometric patterns arranged over all the surface of the wood. A segment of ra'au is missing from one side of the blade. The hoe is red brown in colour with glossy patina.
