This is a hand held iliili. It features a long cylindrical length for the handle part and a short, curved and triangular blade. The handle component is uneven and portrays hafted marks. It is dark brown in colour with a slightly polished surface and made from kieto (ebony). Its base end portrays a circular cross-section. The blade has been woven from lau niu (coconut leaf) and kāniu (coconut midribs) and is flat in form. It portrays a straight, horizontal edge for the base of the blade. As the sides curve inwards, its top edge features a serrated finish. The direction of the woven pattern appears to begin from the spine of the blade. The spine of the blade has been woven over the tapered length of the handle featuring a plaited braid on both sides. Half of the handle length is completely encased by the woven area of the blade. The curved sides of the blade also portray two open woven borders that begin form the base and finish at the top. Cordage of dark brown lau ulu (human hair) has been used to secure and the blade to the handle. It has also been used to create a woven and decorative intersection between the handle and blade. The cordage and pinnules of the blade portray geometric patterns.WāhiNiueAccession Number1924.230Rā Tāpiringa1924Tohu Tuakiri Kē8221 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Iliili, 1924.230, 8221, Photographed by Richard Ng, digital,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1924.230, 8221Takenga ā-AhureaNiueanKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiNiueRāPre 1924Tikanga WaihangawovenWaitohu/māka8221 (handwritten) 8221; Niue Is.
