Iliili

human history

    Fan (English)

Iliili. Fan. This is a hand held fan. It features a length of kieto (ebony wood) for the handle component and a curved, triangular blade. The handle component is uneven, long and spatulate towards the base end. It is dark brown in colour with some linear areas in a slightly lighter tone of brown. The base end has been hafted into a short point showing some depth to the handle.

The blade has been woven from kāniu (coconut midrib) and lau niu (coconut leaf) and is flat in form. The sides curve inwards towards a serrated edge along the top of the blade. A pair of open-woven borders line the curved edges of the blade. The direction of the woven patterns appears to begin from the spine of the blade. The spine of the blade has been woven over the tapered length of the handle featuring a plaited blade on both sides. Cordage of dark brown lau ulu (human hair) has been used to secure the blade to the handle. It has also been used to create a woven and decorative intersection between the handle and blade. The cordage and pinnules of the blade portray a chevron style pattern. An extension of the cord has been inserted through the beginning of the plaited braid.
