'Early missionaries probably introduced the poncho from Tahiti in an effort to cover the bodies of their converts. This tiputa has been dyed yellow, perhaps with turmeric, and decorated with intricate cut-out patters. Although it was collected in Rarotonga in 1899 by the curator of Auckland Museum, these cut-out patterns suggest that it may have been made on Mangaia.' Neich and Pendergrast, 'Pacific Tapa', 1997.
