    Shank with lashing (English)

  • Description

    Matau. Fish hook component (shank and lashing). Used for night time fishing. Shank carved from a single piece of wood. Kiriau (hibiscus fibres) lashing around at long end of shank. The lashing at the top of the shank is finished with a two-ply cord, woven from strips of kiriau, completed with a knot. Indentation at short end of shank to facilitate attachment of point. "8338 RAROTONGA PRES." is written in black ink on the shank.

    There is also a round sticker stuck on the shank with "RAROTONGA T. F. CHEESEMAN PRESENTED" written in black ink across the sticker. Good condition overall.
