Collection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 8354
  • Public Access Text

This unusual costume was collected in Rarotonga, probably at Arorangi village. For a short period at the end of the 19th and early in the 20th century, Cook Islanders from Mangaia and Rarotonga wore tapa costume for certain ritual ceremonies. The fringed edges show influence of earlier Cook Island poncho styles. Many of the pattern on the cloth are typical of the region.
