patu

human history
  • Common Name
    Armament T&E, Bludgeon
  • Description

patu, pumice. Broken transversely into thirds across the blade and where the blade connects with the handle. Base of the handle has broken. Handle has been shaped resulting in a protrusion on one side at the base. Small amount of red kokowai on surface. Six drill holes present on the blade. Patu has been joined together by drilling holes above and below the break in the blade and tying the two pieces together with fibre.

There is a seventh and largest hole drilled into the handle. Handle is elongated and oval shaped. Edges of the blade have been tapered along the edges. Dark staining is present on one side of the blade. Multiple striations are present at random across the surface. Where the join in the lower part was tied together the pumice had been slightly smoothed to allow it to fit. This did not appear so for the handle break so it likely broke after the mending of the blade.
