  • Description

    Toki taraī. Hafted adze. A toki (adze) trapezoidal in cross section of toka Mangaia (Mangaian stalactite) lashed with puru akari (braided coconut sennit) of iri taki toru (3 ply braid) to a squat haft carved from solid toka Mangaia. The haft has a squared base with with raised 'feet' and is reduced into a pyramid shape towards the top. Surface decoration on the haft consists of cross hatching and notches etched into the sides of the haft.

    The toki has been hafted incorrectly, with the flat side of the blade placed posterior. The toki is a light amber colour while the haft is a darker caramel colour.
