Anave

human history
  • Other Name

    Dance club (English)

  • Description

Anave. Dance Club. This is a carved anave made of wood. The anave is a natural brown colour with a smooth part-polished surface. The handle of the club is thick and cylindrical in shape. The handle then widens to a flat four-sided blade with a diamond cross-section and a pointed tip. At one section of the blade, closer to the handle, are two four sided protrusions at either side of the blade.

These protrusions change the profile of the club to share a likeness with a modern day sword. Adorning both sides of the entire blade are mamanu (Samoan decorative motifs). These mamanu are made of triangular indents filled with a white powder. The anave is thought to be an introduced implement used for performance purposes as opposed to being used as an 'au'upega. These implements range in size and shape but mostly follow the lozenge-like blade that is synonymous with the anave.
