Te rabatan te kaneati

human history
  • Other Name

    Fish lure shank (English)

  • Description

Te rabatan te kaneati. Shank. This has been made from te kuano (phosphate) and features te ao (line). Te rabatan is hard in material, cylindrical in form, pale yellow in colour with some white opaque layers and some transparency. One end of te rabatan te matau has been tapered and angled off into a point. A small circular perforation has been drilled through the side. Te ao has been inserted through the perforation and tied off.

Te ao is made of te ira (human hair) and te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage). The free end of te ao has been tied in two places and shows where it would be attached a longer te ao when in use. The opposite end of te rabatan te matau portrays a circular cross-section. An angled furrow has been filed perpendicular to the circular cross-section. This would be where te tabon te matau (point) would be positioned and then lashed onto te rabatan te matau.
