Vaka ama

human history
  • Other Name

    Model canoe (English)

  • Description

Vaka ama. A model of a single hull outrigger canoe. This vaka ama is designed for a single occupant. All components of this vaka ama are carved from wood, brown in colour, and lashed together with fine pulu (coconut sennit). The tino vaka (hull) is carved from what may possibly be moota or kieto wood. It is a darker brown colour in comparison to the lighter brown of the other components of wood.

Attached to cover the tino vaka is a carved puke (combined prow and stern cover component) which is lashed securely with pulu at several points along the length and sides to the tino vaka underneath. ALOFI SOUTH written along one side of the prow. A small seat is inserted in the interior of the tino vaka. Decorative incised triangular lines are applied to the surface of the wooden puke. Two wooden tau toko (crossbooms) extend out from the tino vaka, with two connecting wooden beams between them. Four tutuki (wooden stakes) are tied to each of these tau toko which connect to a hama (outrigger) of lightweight wood. A fine length of pulu works as a suspension cord, which is tied to the tau toko. Two model fohe (paddles) are associated with this vaka ama.
