    fish hook, trolling lure shank

  • Description

    fish hook, trolling lure shank. Pearl shell (Pinctada margaritifera). Pointed at one end where there is a central perforation for line attachment. Eye diameter 2mm drilled from both sides, with the hole wider on reverse side (cortex). At the distal end are two grooves for attaching the hook. The upper lashing groove is more pronounced the lower. The edges of the lure on the cortex side are slightly rounded and angled file scratches are visible. Slight longitudinal curvature.

    Found in archaeological excavation at Tairua in 1964. Occupation is radiocarbon dated to early-mid1300s.
