Chinese 'opium' scales seized(together with an opium pipe) by Auckland Police during a raid on a Chinese opium den circa 1930s.
The pipe and scales (1999.45.1) were given by the police to Police Surgeon, Dr Kirker, some time before 1950.
During the early 20th century Grey's Ave had become a focus for Auckland's Chinese community, and by the 1920s the neighbourhood included Chinese boarding houses, opium dens, fan tan, pakapoo and gambling houses.
