  • Description

    Kete. Bag. For carrying personal items. Woven from rauara (pandanus leaf) with dyed apuraka (giant swamp taro) akamanea (decorative) overlay. Flat rectangular shape. Woven in check with akamanea areas woven in twill overlaid with coloured strips of apuraka to create two akamanea bands of patterns at upper and lower boundaries of the kete. Upper rim is finished in patara (serrated edge). Single tatai (handle) transverse, knotted to the bag.

    Tatai is braided cord of natural rauara (pandanus leaf). Kete is natural in colour, with dyed-brown/red and black overlaid apuraka for decorative effect. Lower decorative band is a punarua pattern (repeated natural squares standing on corner). Two rows of horizontal twill span the length of the bag. Upper band is matakere pattern (repeated dark coloured squares standing on their corners). Bottom is closed up with an iri (braid) to finish. Presented by The Misses White in 1926.
