The form of this chair is based on English Arts and Crafts movement promoter William Morris’ ‘Morris chair’ (or ‘easy chair with an adjustable back’) designed in the 1860s.
Variations of the type were popularised throughout England and America. This example moves away from the simplified Morris version with the additional carving representing Patara Te Tuhi Ngati Mahuta, based on Auckland painter Charles F. Goldie’s depiction of him in ‘A Hot Day’ of 1901.
