Waqa Ukuuku

human history

    Model canoe (English)

  • Kupu whakaahua

Waqa Ukuuku. Model of a European-style boat. The boat is constructed from planks of wood that are 'sewn' or lashed together from the interior of the hull. It has five seats and is ribbed. It has an extended prow and shows signs of having mast and tackle (now missing) but not of an outrigger. It is cracked along one side. The waqa ukuuku is dark brown in colour with some patina.

Five smaller attachments of fragmented wood are included with this waqa ukuuku, including the blade of a paddle.
