human history
  • Other Name

    Adze, Hafted (English)

  • Description

Toki tarai. Hafted adze. Top heavy. A large, roughly polished toki (adze - triangular in cross section) hafted to a long, wooden haft shaped from a section of tree branch. The adze has been hafted incorrectly, with the flat side of the blade placed posterior.

Lashing of puru akari (braided coconut sennit) of a flat iri taki toru (3-ply braid) lashed on to the top of the haft to secure the adze, with a piece of coconut sheath between the lashing and the adze, acting as a gasket. No carved surface decoration on the haft itself which is natural in colour. The lashing is natural in colour and the toki (adze) is dark grey in colour.
