Set 6 jewel setting opening and closing tools

six brass and steel tools. Steel part has winding screw for opening and closing. Inside black leather box with dark purple satin and velvet interior. This set of tools has 3 sizes for opening the setting and 3 tool sizes for closing it.

A set of 6 opening and closing tools for jewel setting. In a jewelled watch, most of the jewels (of synthetic ruby) were circular, with a small polished hole in the centre, to act as a hard bearing for a revolving steel pivot. Most of the earlier jewels (until around the 1930s) were held in place in a sunken area, with a raised portion of the surrounding brass being burnished or rubbed down over the edge of the jewel. If the jewel became damaged, it had to be removed. Then the remaining metal had to be raised up to allow a new jewel to be inserted, and then closed down again to hold the new jewel.
