human history
  • Description

Tool for flattening and thinning wheels

steel and brass circular tool, central cylindrical rod with two steel protruding rods which fix onto steel rod of main part of tool. Textured around bottom ring. Marked at top: "SWISS MADE".

Occasionally wheels or small parts of watches needed to be flattened or made slightly thinner. This tool was designed for that purpose. The article was placed inside the hole in the centre of the tool, and the tool was placed on an oilstone, abrasive material or a lapping block. Light pressure downwards was made on the central piece while the whole was moved around on the abrasive, smoothing and polishing the underside of the article.
