Te mwae

human history
  • Other Name

    Neck ornament (English)

  • Description

Te mwae. Neck ornament. This is a Neck ornament made three material components: te kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage), te nana (coconut shell discs) and wiin te kua kewe (porpoise teeth). Wiin te kua kewe has been threaded independantly across the Neck ornament. They are small in size, cylindrical in form with a short pointed end defining the tooth part and then a tapered stubbed and at times open hollow that defines the root.

A small circular perforation has been drilled into the end where te kora has been threaded through. A series of up to six or seven tiny ground discs of te nana have been threaded in between each wiin te kua kewe. Towards the ends of the Neck ornament this amount has reduced to one or two discs of te nana. They are dark brown in colour and hard in material. Four small knots of te kora have been made throughout the Neck ornament to either increase its length or hold together as one. The Neck ornament has been left unfastened and the selvedge's of kora are short and fibrous.
