'Mangaia is one of the rare places in Polynesia where masks were worn, by both men and women, with tapa costumes in dances at festivals. These Mangaian masks seem to be a late nineteenth-century innovation on Mangaia, perhaps inspired by Cook Islander missionary experience of masked dancers in Melanesia.' Neich and Pendergrast, 'Pacific Tapa', 1997.
