Throwing stone. This maka tau is made from maka uli (black stone or basalt) and would have been used in war as a throwing weapon. When used during combat, it would be thrown at the enemy from as far away a distance as four meters. This maka tau is oval in shape and round but is slightly flat on two sides so that its form is not completely ovoid. It also tapers slightly at the bottom and is wider at the top. It is dark grey, almost black in colour with some light grey specks and marks. It is smooth in texture and polished but has some natural lines and small marks dotting the exterior surface. It looks to have been shaped by hammer dressing and grinding. There are also the remnants of two stick on labels on the surface of the stone. They have no legible writing on them and have faded to an off-white colour. The maka tau was often used as a defending weapon in combat and if thrown correctly, could do real damage and even cause death.WāhiNiueAccession Number1927.124Rā Tāpiringa1927Tohu Tuakiri Kē1061 (ethnology)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Maka tau, 1927.124, 1061, Photographed by Richard Ng,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 1927.124, 1061Takenga ā-AhureaNiueanKohingaDr. Peter Buck (Te Rangi Hiroa)Kaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiNiueRāPre 1927Tikanga Waihangapolished Hammered beaten groundWaitohu/māka1061; Niue Is.; Pres.
