  • Description

    Kofe. Flute. Kofe were often used in courting rituals. This kofe is made from a light brown wood, possibly sourced from pao wood. It is short and cylindrical in shape. It is hollow through the middle and has three holes along one side. This kofe was presented to the Museum by Te Rangi Hiroa, Dr Peter Buck in 1927. Kofe are also known as kilikihoa, kikihoa, and kilikiliho.

    The last known expert practitioner of the art of kofe-playing was Talaiti Posini, from the village of Vaiea.
