  • Description

    Ruatangaeo. Hafted adze with unattached adze. A large sized intricately carved wooden haft with a squared pedestal base and rounded mid section. Top of the haft carved out to accommodate the fitting of an adze. Puru akari (braided coconut sennit) of a fine flat iri taki toru (3-ply braid) lashed on to the top of the haft. K-form carving motifs (signature Mangaian carving motif), triangular motifs repeated in rows carved onto the wooden pedestal, among other geometric motifs.

    The lashing and carved wooden haft stained dark brown in colour.

    Toki. Adze. Carved from toka kerekere (black basalt stone). Trapezoidal in cross-section. Sharp cutting edge, prominent shoulder, blade highly polished. Butt end and poll left pecked. Dark in colour.
