haft, adze

human history
  • Description

adze handle. Dr P.H Buck (6/4/35) Localises the above as Mangaia, Cook Islands. "I have no doubt now that the adze is from Mangaia in the Cook Is. & not from Tahiti as marked on the adze. There are four others of this type, lashing pattern and bind in shaft: two in the British Museum one in the Liverpool Museum & one the collection of Captain A.W.F Fuller of London. Of course there may be others. Auckland Museum is fortunate in having such a rare artefact."
