Kato pesi

human history
  • Other Name

    Purse (English)

  • Description

Kato pesi. Purse. This is a hand woven kato pesi. It has been made with lau fā (pandanus leaf), lau fou (lace bark), and kāniu (coconut midrib). It has made to resemble a flat form where its opening is wider than the length of its base. Two kavei (handles) have been attached as separate components from inside the opening. The base has been constructed using a tia (opening and encasement weaving of midribs) technique.

This technique has also been used to construct the remaining framework of the kato pesi. The rim features a curved patterned border. The remaining framework has been covered with strands of lau fou dyed in red and purple colours, portraying a triangular pattern throughout. Red dyed lau fou has been braided to create the kavei. The dyed lau fou has faded over time.
