Pe'ahi

human history
  • Other Name

    Fan (English)

  • Description

Pe'ahi. Fan. This is a hand held fan woven in the form of a flat spade shape. It is a faded yellow in colour and features a painted scene from Hawaii. It is made of lau'hala (pandanus). There are intricately open-woven borders that frame the heart of the fan. The border appears to be machine stitched to the heart of the fan.

The left hand side of the heart's surface features a painted scene depicting Le'ahi (Diamond head), a volcanic tuff cone situated on the island of O'ahū with two men pushing an outrigger canoe to shore. To the right of this scene are the painted words, 'Hawaii'. The reverse surface is plain. A piece of ohe' (bamboo) has lau'hala woven over it and stabilizes the body of the fan when in use. Its modern features of stitching, shape and painted imagery suggest this could have been made for tourism.
