The left hand side of the heart's surface features a painted scene depicting Le'ahi (Diamond head), a volcanic tuff cone situated on the island of O'ahū with two men pushing an outrigger canoe to shore. To the right of this scene are the painted words, 'Hawaii'. The reverse surface is plain. A piece of ohe' (bamboo) has lau'hala woven over it and stabilizes the body of the fan when in use. Its modern features of stitching, shape and painted imagery suggest this could have been made for tourism.
