This is a hand held iliili that consists of two components: a handle and a blade. The handle has been made from a mid-tone brown coloured wood. It is cylindrical and long in form and made from kieto (ebony wood). An open cavity near the base shows its internal hollow. Its base portrays a circular cross-section where the central area protrudes outwards. The blade structure has been woven from pinnules of kāniu (coconut midribs) and lau niu (coconut leaf). It features large open areas that define a pattern across the blade. All the pinnules have been plaited together to form the spine of the blade which encases the end of the handle's length. Cordage of dark lau ulu (brown human hair) has been used to join both the blade and handle together. It has been wrapped around the handle and woven into the pinnules of the blade. Loose lengths of the cordage extend from the coil and show fibrous ends.WāhiUnknownRā TāpiringaUnknownTohu Tuakiri Kē2004x4.452 (temporary accession number)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Iliili, 2004x4.452, Photographed by Jennifer Carol, digital,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 2004x4.452Takenga ā-AhureaunknownKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiUnknownRāUnknownTikanga WaihangawovenWaitohu/māka2004x4.452 (label, stick on/label) Niue?; No number (2004x4.452) (label, stick on/label)Pāoho[mangrove]/hardwood/wood/plant material/AAT Materialspandanus (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibrecoconut (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibreRaraunga Ine445mm265mm15mmHuinga KaupapaFibrework/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūFanPersonal Assistive ArtefactsPersonal GearPersonal ArtefactsWhakahounga o Mua20 Oct 2023 Tūemi e whai hononga Ngā hua o DigitalNZ Page 4 Advertisements Column 3 (Taranaki Daily News 2-5-1919) National Library of New Zealand Page 4 Advertisements Column 4 (Feilding Star, 27 February 1912) National Library of New Zealand Port of Poverty Bay.
