Te reeree

human history
  • Common Name
    Armament T&E, Bludgeon
  • Other Name

    Sword (English)

  • Description

Te reeree. Sword. This is an ornamental depiction of a hand held weapon. It has been made from the following materials: kanni (coconut palm wood), ira (pandanus leaf), kora (coconut sennit fibre cordage), nimwaerere (cordage of human hair and coconut sennit fibres), wii nibakoa (sharks teeth) and the bone claws of waro (sea mantis; stormapod). A length of the kanni has been cut, carved and filed into a cylindrical form portraying a circular cross-section at its base.

Its form tapers into a point forming the tip of the reeree. A width of ira has been wrapped over the intersection of the handle and barbed blade. Nimwaerere has been used to bind it to the length and create a woven pattern through the ira. A fringe has been left at the top. Te noko runs parallel down the sides of the reeree. Te noko has been continuously inlayed with a series of wii ni bakoa then divided by a single claw of the waro towards the end of the reeree. Each piece features perforations where the kora has been inserted and used to lash the attachements to the reeree. The pairs of the noko finish just before the point and have been left exposed.
