Sword. This is an ornamental depiction of a reeree. A length of kanni (coconut palm wood) has been cut, carved and filed to portray the handle and barbed blade as one component. An exposed section at the base with a wider diametre than the barbed blade has been carved for the purpose of a handle. A piece of ira (pandanus leaf) has been wrapped around where the handle and blade intersect. It has been bound off with both nimwaerere (cordage of human hair and coconut sennit fibres) and irauea (cordage of human hair). Bands at the bottom and top of the section of ira show where the two cordages have been woven into the ira, creating a checkered pattern. A length of fringing has been left loose from the top of the encasement. Four pairs of the noko extend from the encasment, both in different lengths. Two pairs extend right to the end of the reeree and the other two extend half way along the reeree. Each pair has been with a series of wii ni bakoa (sharks teeth). The two short pairs have been continuously lashed with wii ni bakoa where as the longer pairs have been divided into three sections of wii ni bakoa. The claw bone of the waro (sea mantis; stormapod) divide each of the sections of wii ni bakoa. They are short in length with a series of curved barbs that become longer towards one end. Both wii ni bakoa and the claws feature perforations where the kora (cordage of coconut sennit fibres) have been inserted and used for the purpose of securing all the attachments to the reeree. A piece of ira has been used to finish the pointed end of the ree. It has been bound and woven in similar fashion to the intersect of the handle and blade with the nimwaerere. A coil of kora (coconut sennit fibres) features at the mid section of the barbed blade.WāhiGilbert Islands/KiribatiRā TāpiringaUnknownTohu Tuakiri Kē2004x4.488 (temporary accession number)WāhangaPacific Uiuitia Tāpirihia ki Taku Kete Te reeree, 2004x4.488, Photographed by Jennifer Carol,… … Read more Tirohia ngā pikitia Mātātuhi me ngā tuhinga Mātātuhi Mātātuhi Taonga Taonga Rārangi MihiCollection of Auckland Museum Tamaki Paenga Hira, 2004x4.488Takenga ā-AhureaKiribatiKaiwaihanga Matua Unknown (Maker)WāhiGilbert Islands/KiribatiRāUnknownTikanga Waihangacarved drilled woven lashed inlay [handmade] [handwoven]Waitohu/māka2004x4.488 (label, stick on/label)Pāohosennit/cord (fiber product)pandanus (leaf)/leaf (plant material)/plant materialcoconut (fibre)/plant fibre/natural fibre/fibre[bone][coconut wood]/wood/plant materialhuman hair/hair/animal materialcoconut leaf midrib/coconut leaf/leaf (plant material)/plant materialshark/fish/tooth/boneRaraunga Ine730mm70mmHuinga KaupapaWarfare/- PACIFIC SUBJECTS -Taumata whakarōpūArmament T&E, WeaponTools & Equipment for Science & TechnologyWhakahounga o Mua05 Dec 2018 E hangaia tonutia ana te kohinga tuihono a Tāmaki Paenga Hira; tāpirihia ai ngā whakahoutanga me ngā pūkete i ia wiki.
