  • Description

    Kete. Bag. For carrying personal items. Woven from rauara (pandanus leaf) strips with overlaid dyed-brown and dyed-black apuraka (giant swamp taro) akamanea (decoration). Flat, rectangular shape. The bag has a patara (serrated) rim.

    The upper overlaid akamanea on the kete consists of two motifs known as hetu matariki (motif consisting of a set of four natural-coloured wefts in the shape of a star) alternating with punarua (natural-coloured squares, each standing on one corner) placed in-between rows of check and decorative border rows known as ara veri (diagonal rows of small rectangles). The lower pattern consists of two rows of punarua. Braided iri taki rua (2-ply braid) tatai (handle) made of natural-coloured rauara.
