Clam shell adze. Adzes were invaluable tools for Moana Pacific societies prior to the introduction of European tools and materials. They were made in a variety of sizes and shapes according to their required use. This toki (adze) is presented in an incomplete form, worked from gēgē (tridacna, or clam shell). It is irregular in shape, although significantly reduces towards the poll. It has a sharp cutting edge with a highly polished bevel. All surfaces of the blade are flaked and textured, with grooves visible along the sides of the blade.
