Untrained as a fashion designer, Rei Kawakubo studied fine arts and literature. Her first Paris show in 1981, presented clothes the challenged accepted conventions with its use of dark colours, in particular black, which were not popular at the time. Kawakubo's clothes are defined by their sculptural shapes, concentrating on structure rather than surface.
